COIMBATORE: The Tirupur north all-woman police arrested a 25-year-old man on Saturday on charges of impregnating a minor girl under the Pocso Act.
The arrested person has been identified as K Karthik, who was working at a printing unit on Kongu Main Road in Tirupur. Police said Karthik befriended a 15-year-old girl, who was residing in his area.
Whenever the girl was alone at her residence, Karthik sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions for the past one year.
When the girl became six-month pregnant, her parents learned about it. They lodged a complaint with the Tirupur north all-woman police who registered a case against Karthik under section 5 (l) (penetrative sexual assault on the child more than once or repeatedly) read with 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

Coimbatore: Sleuths of the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) on Thursday arrested a police sub-inspector and a constable for accepting Rs 6,000 from a man for not booking a case of drunk driving.
The arrested people were identified as A Maruthaiah Pandi, 54, and S Sakthivel, a constable attached to the traffic police station at Sulur.
The cops had intercepted Murugan, a wall painter and a native of Dharmapuri, when he was returning to Kalapatti on a motorcycle on January 31. As Murugan was drunk, they seized the motorcycle and demanded Rs 12,000 for not registering a case. When Murugan expressed inability to pay the bribe, the cops agreed to let him go if he pays 6,000.

CHENNAI: For the first time in 277 days, Tamil Nadu reported less than 500 fresh infections. The state recorded 494 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday. The last time TN reported less than 500 fresh infections was on May 3, 2020, with 266 new cases. The next day, TN added 527 cases.
The state added four deaths to its Covid toll, taking the cumulative number of fatalities to 12,375. Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram and Kanyakumari reported one death each on Thursday. While a 54-year-old man admitted on February 2 died within four hours due to pneumonia and respiratory failure, all other patients were elderly with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, heart and kidney ailments.
