The Health Department said 88 persons were discharged on Thursday and a 48-year-old woman died of the disease at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. The woman was also suffering from diabetes and systemic hypertension and was admitted to the hospital on January 1. With this, the toll so far stood at 659. Tiruppur reported 27 new cases, taking the district’s total tally to 17,292. A 55-year-old woman from the district died, taking the district’s toll to 220. As many as 16,798 have recovered and 274 were active cases. On Thursday, 30 patients were discharged.

While 86 people were discharged from government and private hospitals in the district, active cases stand at 738. The total number of Covid deaths in the district has gone up to 657. Though the health department has managed to bring down the number of Covid-19 cases to less than 90 a day, and deaths to an average of one person a day, the district continues to see deaths occurring within 24 hours of hospitalization. In December alone, nearly 20% of deaths occurred within 24 hours of hospitalization. Of the 41 deaths due to Covid-19 recorded in December, eight occurred within 24 hours of hospitalization. Another seven deaths occurred within 48 hours of hospitalization, which means 36.5% of the deaths, or 15 out of 41, occured within two days of hospitalization. Nine out of 10 deaths have occurred in government hospitals.

Forest Department officials said that Muhammad Niyas (65) was working as a security guard at a private building near the Government Law College on Maruthamalai Road. At around 6 a.m., he was walking on the road in search of a tea shop when he encountered a male elephant that had strayed into the residential area. The elephant pushed him to the ground, which led to his death, the officials said.
