President Akufo-Addo has described the late former President Jerry John Rawlings as his “good friend and a repository of sound advice.”
According to Mr Akufo-Addo, in moments of difficulty in his presidency, he could count on Mr Rawlings’ considerable “wealth of experience and knowledge,” and “on those occasions, he came through for me.”
Nana Akufo-Addo said these in a tribute to Mr Rawlings during his final funeral rites at the Black Square in Accra on Wednesday, 27 January 2021.
The President admitted that although Mr Rawlings and himself were not the best of friends at a point, with time, things changed and they came to see value in each other.

President Akufo-Addo has announced that the University of Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, will be renamed after late former President, Jerry John Rawlings.
Although Mr. Rawlings rejected the honour while he was alive, President Akufo-Addo said his family has endorsed the decision.
President Akufo-Addo announced this at Rawlings’ pre-burial service held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him. Former President Jerry John Rawlings will be buried today, January 27, 2021, ending four days of mourning activities.
The pre-burial service which will take place at the Independence Square will see scores of Ghanaians paying their last respects to Mr. Rawlings.
President Akufo-Addo, the Vice President and other government officials will be present at the funeral.
Liberia President George Weah and Sierra Leone President, Julius Maada Bio are among the foreign dignitaries expected to attend the funeral

The Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Dr. Lorna Renner has described Christ Temple of the International Central Gospel Church’s annual support for the Children’s Cancer Unit as a life-saving gesture.
Since 2011, over 1500 children have benefited from annual support by the church to the unit.
In 2020, the church donated GHC200,000 to the centre. Over 200 children have benefited from the donation made in support of the treatment of children with cancer.
On Wednesday, the church again donated an amount of GHC200,000 to the unit. Presenting the amount, the wife of the General overseer, Mrs Joy Otabil, said the joy of the church was to have learnt that many of the children that had benefited from the financial support had fully recovered and were living productive lives.

ACCRA, Ghana Ghana’s late president Jerry John Rawlings was buried at the country’s military cemetery in the capital after four days of commemorations to mark the death of the former leader who was loathed by some and loved by many in the West African nation.
Rawlings transformed from a military head of state who staged two coups to a democratically elected president who served for 19 years and is credited with laying the foundation for peaceful elections and transfers of power in Ghana.
