After today’s series opener with the San Diego Padres was postponed due to inclement weather, the Colorado Rockies announced that they have placed starting first baseman CJ Cron on the 10-day injured list with lower back strain. This move is retroactive to May 7th.

Cron was a late scratch on May 7th against the St. Louis Cardinals with pain and tightness in his lower back, and the Rockies were hopeful he would be able to return for the series against the Padres. The Rockies have been sorely missing his offensive production, getting shut out in two of the three games against the Cardinals.

The Rockies’ el cangrejo, Raimel Tapia, is having a great season. After hitting for a career high .321 BA in his last year’s short 184 at-bat season, Tapia has followed up by now hitting a similar .314 in 121 at-bats. And so far this season he’s had a team high eight multi-hit games and is currently on a nine game hitting streak. I think it’s safe to label Tapia as a professional hitter. It’s not just that he’s gotten all these hits, it’s how he’s doing it.

This afternoon the Colorado Rockies announced that they had selected the contract of 1B/OF Connor Joe from Triple-A Albuquerque. In a corresponding roster move, RHP José Mujica has been optioned down to the Isotopes.

The 28-year-old Joe was originally a first round pick with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014, but was traded around the league before finally making his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2019. He sat out for the 2020 season after a testicular cancer diagnosis.
Colorado Rockies minor leaguer Colton Welker gets 80-game drug suspension
NEW YORK Highly touted Colorado Rockies minor league third baseman Colton Welker was suspended 80 games by the commissioner s office Thursday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
The 23-year-old Welker, drafted in 2016 out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, is currently on the roster for Triple-A Albuquerque. His suspension goes into immediate effect and will be without pay.
The substance he tested positive for was Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), which is in violation of Major League Baseball s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The Colorado Rockies announced this evening that their 1B/3B prospect Colton Welker (No. 11 COL, No. 5 PuRP) has been suspended for 80 games in accordance with Major League Baseball’s Drug Prevention and Treatment Program after testing positive for a banned performance enhancing substance.
Per the Athletic’s Nick Groke, Welker tested positive for DHCMT: a steroid created in East Germany in 1961. Teammate Justin Lawrence tested positive for the same compound in 2020 and was suspended for the duration of the season.
