UNION COUNTY â The poll results surprised La Grande High School Principal Brett Baxter.
The school surveyed seniors about what type of graduation ceremony they would like. The vast majority indicated they wanted a traditional one in their gym, Baxter said.
The studentsâ wishes will be granted June 5 at at 10 a.m. when a traditional graduation ceremony will start in the LHS gym. The commencement ceremony will be possible because of Union Countyâs falling COVID-19 infection rates, which now has the county in the lower risk category, meaning small crowds can gather indoors.
Holding a commencement ceremony a year ago in a gym was off limits. Union County had a higher infection rate and like other counties was operating under more stringent state COVID-19 safety restrictions. UNION COUNTY â Leaders in some Oregon school districts, including Astoria, are rejecting standardized assessment testing, which normally happens each spring, because of instructional time lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assessment testing still is alive this spring in Union County, however, where all six of its public school districts are conducting it through May. Educators in the districts said they believe the tests provide valuable insight.
âThey tell us when we have gaps in our instruction. They drive our instruction,â said Cove School District Superintendent Earl Pettit.
Elgin School District Superintendent Dianne Greif also said assessment test scores are meaningful.
âThey help us develop future instructional strategies,â Greif said.

COVE â The Cove School Districtâs search for a new principal is off to a promising start.
The school district began accepting applications Jan. 7 for the principal for grades seven through 12. So far, it has received two applications.
In addition, Cove School District Superintendent Earl Pettit said a number of other educators interested in applying are scheduling trips to Cove to see what its public schools and community are like. The deadline for submitting applications is March 8.
âWe are receiving a lot of response,â Pettit said. âThere is a lot of interest being expressed.â
Pettit said the school district hopes to have someone hired by late March or early April. The superintendent said the top quality the school district is looking for in a candidate is successful experience as a school administrator. He said this is particularly important in a small district such as Cove because it has no high school administrators anyone can mentor under as an
