Number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to rise at Gouverneur Central School

GOUVERNEUR — The number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Gouverneur Central School District continued to rise over the weekend. In regular Facebook updates, district officials said Monday that one of four students sent for testing resulted in a positive COVID test Monday morning. Nurses were involved in contract tracing Monday for the secondary student’s case. They had reported Sunday afternoon that one student tested positive, and contact tracing would begin Monday. They also posted earlier Sunday that of three students who were sent for testing, one returned with a positive result. The student in question is at the high, officials wrote in the social media post, and will result in an additional set of names being called for contract tracing as their schedule involved a new group of students.

Gouverneur Central to resume hybrid instruction Monday for high school, eighth grade

GOUVERNEUR — Students in high school and eighth grade at Gouverneur Central School District will resume hybrid learning next week. The district announced the reopening on its official Facebook page Thursday morning. The decision comes after two months of remote learning stemming from escalating COVID-19 cases and potential exposures among students and staff. A mix of in-person and virtual learning will begin Monday, with eighth-graders housed alone in the middle school and students attending out-of-district BOCES programs transported. The announcement notes district buildings “will be evaluated daily,” and elementary and lower middle school grades cannot be staffed until at least Jan. 11, due to required quarantine periods.

Gouverneur Central School extends remote learning through Jan 4

GOUVERNEUR — An extension of fully remote instruction is now in place for Gouverneur Central School District until Jan. 4, the district announced Thursday afternoon. Superintendent Lauren F. French said the decision has been made in consultation with district administrators and the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department and is based on a steady figure of employees in quarantine. The district ended last week with 31 people either testing positive for the novel coronavirus or in quarantine, Mrs. French said. Several of those people have been cleared from quarantine, she said, but the total is back up to 29 as of Thursday. In a 24-hour period, from 1:45 p.m. Wednesday to 1:45 p.m. Thursday, seven district employees were added to the quarantine list.
