Hawks nab five in Soweto hostels for murder of JMPD officer

Johannesburg - A Hawks led police operation has arrested five suspects in connection with the murder of a Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer who was hijacked killed at the end of March after returning from a soccer match.
Officers from the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime, Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Highway Patrol and Traffic Police and the Soweto West Trio Task Team arrested the suspects at hostels in Diepkloof and Jabulani, Soweto, on Thursday night.
The murdered JMPD officer, Neo Sepuru, 26, had been driving his private car after returning from a departmental soccer match in Malboro when he was hijacked outside his home in Dube Village, Soweto.
Three people allegedly linked to a truck hijacking syndicate have been arrested.
Among the three are a metro police officer and a police officer.
They were arrested after being spotted driving a vehicle with false licence plates.
A hijacking syndicate allegedly responsible for targeting trucks on Gauteng highways has been dealt a significant blow after three men were arrested.
They were arrested by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU) in Johannesburg on Tuesday shortly after allegedly hijacking a truck, said Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane. The three – a member of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department s VIP Protection Unit, a member of the South African Police Flying Squad and a civilian – were spotted driving a vehicle fitted with false number plates in the Johannesburg central business district, he said.

NATIONAL NEWS - The National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU) has slammed the brakes on a traffic and police officers’ syndicate, which has allegedly been hijacking trucks on Gauteng freeways.
In a statement, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said this came after three men were arrested in Johannesburg on Tuesday, shortly after hijacking a truck.
“The three - a member of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s VIP Protection Unit, a member of the South African Police Flying Squad and a civilian - were spotted driving a vehicle fitted with false number plates in the Johannesburg central business district,” RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said in a statement.

One netizen pointed out that they had also been “stopped by fake police on N3” in the past. The user, known only as Lelo M, said they were “being followed by their sister” and added:
“Lucky I was being followed by my sister and her friend so they got shocked when they pulled us and two cars pulled over behind us”.

Different teams of the Gauteng Highway Patrol (HP) Unit this past weekend, secured the arrest of a total of seven suspects after recovering four stolen vehicles and one suspected stolen vehicle, a money-box belonging to a Cash-in-Transit company with an undisclosed amount of cash, and an illegal firearm.
The HP team that was conducting a Vehicle Checkpoint (VCP) operation next to Mabena traffic circle in Mamelodi on Saturday, 06 March 2021 stopped and searched a white Toyota Etios and its three occupants. The members found in the vehicle a firearm with serial numbers filed off as well as live rounds of ammunition. The three were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
