Vesna Nuon arrived in the U.S. in 1982 after surviving the brutal Khmer Rouge reign under Pol Pot that killed 1.7 million people, or about a quarter of Cambodia’s population, between 1975 and 1979.
He recalls some Americans, including students at his Boston high school, were less than welcoming. “I was not only verbally harassed to go back to my country, but also during lunch breaks they spat in my food. I told cafeteria staff who were monitoring the area, but they turned a blind eye and deaf ear to me,” he told VOA Cambodian.

Authorities in southern Vietnam’s Dong Nai province arrested and later released an ethnic Khmer Krom youth and labor activist after he released a book about indigenous rights, drawing condemnation from a Khmer Krom advocacy group.
Yoeung Kaiy said in a post to his Facebook account following his release on Wednesday morning that he had been arrested a day earlier by “around 100 police officers” who raided his home allegedly without a warrant and confiscated some 100 books detailing the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, his cellphone, and his computer.
He said the police returned his cellphone and computer but kept the books and charged him with “publishing without permission” and “tax evasion.”

China approves second shipment of Covid jabs

The Chinese government has agreed to provide an additional 400,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine for the second phase of Cambodia’s vaccination campaign. These doses are scheduled to arrive in Cambodia before the Khmer New Year in April.
This comes as the Ministry of Health recorded 15 more cases of Covid-19 on March 1, all but one of which were linked to the February 20 community transmission.
On February 7, the first batch of 600,000 doses of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine donated by China was delivered to Cambodia. The government then launched the first Covid-19 vaccination campaign on February 10.
