$1 3 million in HUD funds to be voted upon in Fort Smith

Fort Smith Times Record The city s appropriation of more than $1.3 million in 2021 Housing and Urban Development funds to nonprofits and housing initiatives will be decided Tuesday night. More than $458,000 would go toward the Crawford Sebastian Community Development Council for new construction, down payment assistance and lot acquisition. Fort Smith Housing Rehabilitation Assistance and city administration would also receive more than $100,000 each. The city has specifically listed an increase in development of units and affordability of housing for homeownership and lessening homelessness as two of its objectives in the appropriations.

Share Updated: 6:03 AM CDT Apr 1, 2021 The CDC extended the federal eviction moratorium through June, and there are thousands of dollars available for Arkansas renters who are behind on payments.The Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council (CSCDC) exists to help people in the area access those funds. “It scares them to know that they may be two or three months behind in rent, and they have no idea what to do with it,” CSCDC Deputy Director Carol Jenkins said. “Give us a call, and see what we can do because we re here to help. That s what this CAP agency does.” Jenkins said there is $200,000 in state Community Development Block Grant Money alone. They also have around $5,000

Former Van Buren Mayor Gene Bell dies at age 89 Bell served one term on the Van Buren City Council and then went on to serve as Mayor of Van Buren from 1978-1990. According to his obituary, Bell passed away on Feb. 20, 2021. He was a 1949 graduate of Van Buren High School and attended Fort Smith Community College until he joined the US Navy from 1951-1955. He was a Korean War Veteran.  He was an accountant for Evans Coal Company in Fort Smith before going into business with his best friend, Earl Robinson as Robinson-Bell, Inc. He was also Vice-President & Cashier of People’s Bank.
