Pamplin Media Group - Brown announces schools should re-open buildings in just weeks

March 05 2021 Elementary kids should be back by March 29 and middle and high schoolers by April 19. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced yet another new set of school re-opening guidelines on Friday, March 5, that mandates public school students be back in classrooms before the weeks of March 29 for elementary students and April 19 for middle and high schoolers. Whether or not public schools should return kids to the classroom this spring is no longer up for discussion: the science and data is clear, schools can return to in-person instruction with a very low risk of COVID-19 transmission, particularly with a vaccinated workforce, Brown said in a letter to state health and education agencies.

Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: What lessons have educators learned from the pandemic era?

February 26 2021 Chris Long, principal of Willamette Connections Academy in Scio, says the COVID-19 shutdown provides valuable insight. This past year has been a game changer in the world of education. We should reflect back when Gov. Kate Brown closed in-person schools nearly a year ago to stop the COVID-19 virus spread. Oregon students not only used distance learning throughout the pandemic, but also during record wildfires and winter storms. Traditional schools should be applauded for quickly implementing and evolving emergency distance learning over the last year. Large-scale change overnight is never easy, especially when prompted by a crisis. As a full-time online school leader I know the high-quality educational experience that Connections Academy provides was built specifically for the virtual environment. We are among several online public schools operating in Oregon for many years.

Pamplin Media Group - Gresham students and parents rally to re-open schools

February 26 2021 A group of protesters says online learning is a failure and it is safe to go back to in-person learning. Naomi Haring is hurtling toward the end of her freshman at Barlow High School, but she has never taken a class in the Barlow building. She joined a clutch of people at the administrative offices of the Gresham-Barlow School District this week, calling for schools to reopen buildings for in-person classes. We re not being effectively educated online. It s not possible to get a good education and be prepared for college, she said at the afternoon rally Wednesday, Feb. 24. Our mental health is going down really fast. It s taken a big impact on students of all ages, she added.
