25 February 2021: Total picks AI-driven energy platform company AutoGrid for 25MW French project
The delivery of grid-balancing services from Total’s recently-commissioned 25MW / 25MWh battery storage project in Dunkirk, northern France will be managed by AutoGrid’s Flex virtual power plant (VPP) platform.
Currently France’s biggest electrochemical energy storage plant although it looks set to be overtaken for that crown soon energy major Total was contracted by grid operator RTE to deliver the battery energy storage system (BESS) and it was announced as in operation earlier this year. The BESS comprises 11x 2.3MWh lithium-ion container solutions made by Total subsidiary Saft.

Batteries are uniquely placed to enter multiple revenue markets, with the wholesale market becoming increasingly interesting.
In this morning’s Energy Storage Summit 2021 keynote discussion,
What is the key for really making money from batteries?, the panel talked through the numerous routes available to battery energy storage currently.
The growth in the ancillary market remains one of the biggest avenues for revenue, in particular in the UK, where “the balancing services market is very attractive at the moment because it’s undersubscribed” said Ben Guest, managing director at stock exchange listed dedicated investment fund Gresham House Energy Storage Fund.

Storage investor Gresham House Energy Storage Fund has completed the acquisitions two projects in the UK totalling 45MW.
The listed player has bought a 35MW battery project located in North Shields, Tyne and Wear, and a 10MW battery project located in Essex.
The projects are both operational battery-only sites with total export/import capacity of 45MW and both are connected to the distribution network.
They were commissioned in 2018 and generate availability-based contracted revenues from Enhanced Frequency Response services provided to National Grid (maturing in 2022), as well as having capacity market contracts.
The total operational capacity of the fund s investment portfolio is now 395MW, across 15 projects in 12 counties.
