An investigation into the coronavirus outbreak at Weston General Hospital has highlighted a number of areas for improvement in healthcare.
Thirty-one patients died after contracting Covid-19 at the hospital, and an internal investigation carried out by the trust revealed the infection ‘may have’ been a factor in 18 of those deaths.
A report from a Lessons Learned investigation, which focused on outbreak management at the hospital, has been published this week.
The investigation, commissioned on behalf of the area’s Outbreak Control Team, highlighted shortcomings in the way data was collected and presented, meaning the emerging outbreak was not detected early enough.

Health leaders at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (BNSSG CCG) have announced their preferred site for a multi-million pound health centre for Weston and are inviting people to help shape the design of the building.
BNSSG CCG has confirmed a development at Weston Rugby Club is the preferred option and hopes to work with the developer, Studio Hive, to create the health centre in one of the units that will be built on the land surrounding the club’s recreation ground in Sunnyside Road.
Rowcroft Medical Centre and Beeches Green Health Centre in Stroud has been named as two of Gloucestershire s community Covid-19 vaccination centres. GP practice teams, with the support of local partners including volunteers, will start vaccination of priority groups (over 80s) at the sites in the coming days, pending vaccine deliveries. Starting with people over 80, roll out of the vaccination programme will be expanded in the coming weeks and months to include other priority groups by age and people who are particularly vulnerable. People are being asked to wait for their GP surgery to contact them about local arrangements and timings.
