Why Lake Powell visitors will have less lake to play in this year

Why Lake Powell visitors will have less lake to play in this year Brian Maffly © Francisco Kjolseth (Francisco Kjolseth | Salt Lake Tribune file photo) The Colorado River flows into Lake Powell near Hite Marina in February 2021. Water levels in Powell are expected to reach historic lows this year. Editor’s note • This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism. When boaters return to Lake Powell this spring and summer, they will find even less lake to cruise, more traffic to navigate and fewer places to reach the water. That’s because the ever-sagging water levels at Powell and its larger cousin, Lake Mead, are expected to reach historic lows this year in the face of a 20-year drought that is making it ever more difficult to recreate on the Colorado River’s two largest reservoirs and someday could render one inoperable.

Liz Bowles was on a recent fishing trip with her family and said the water was so low on their trip that new areas they had never seen were exposed. She said that the receded water line had exposed some litter, a few things, like soda cans and things like that, which she said she and family members cleaned up.

Historically low Lake Powell water levels cause closures of some launch ramps, other changes

ST. GEORGE Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is advising visitors to be aware of changes to water access points and boat launch areas on Lake Powell this year due to declining water levels through the summer. The Bureau of Reclamation forecasts for 2021 and 2022, Lake Powell water levels will continue to drop, according to a press release issued by the National Park Service. Due to this, boaters should check the status of their preferred launch destinations before heading to the lake. The latest information on current boat launch and marina facilities can be found online. The park regularly makes adjustments to infrastructure such as launch ramps, floating docks and walkways to accommodate fluctuating lake levels and to maintain visitor access to the maximum extent possible.
