Run by Mellis Haward and Kyle Buchanan, the AJ 40 under 40 practice combines an ethos of contributing to wider society with looking after the wellbeing of its own employees
The last AJ 40 under 40 made a big impression on the two directors of Archio, who had just graduated when it came out in 2005. Mellis Haward, 38, and Kyle Buchanan, 39, – who met while studying at Cambridge – remember being particularly impressed by the ‘joyful’ work of AOC and the urban design approach demonstrated by Witherford Watson Mann and 5th Studio.
The pair bring experience of working for a number of leading practices in the past, including Glenn Howells Architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Sergison Bates, Moxon and Gort Scott. Significant projects include nine new homes and a refurbished pub completed within the curtilage of the Grade II-listed Temple Inn in Somerset and an ongoing scheme to

Contractor GMI Construction has started building the 34,000 sq ft office block on Liverpool’s Tower Road South, a scheme now renamed ‘Hythe’ after the Old English for ‘a landing place or small harbour for ships or boats’.
Hythe, the first speculative office development in Birkenhead for a decade, according to its developer Peel L&P, is to deliver flexible, quality office space for local businesses.
The three-storey building has been designed by Glenn Howells Architects and will have a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating for its green credentials. Construction work is expected to complete next year, and to run alongside the current streetscaping works taking place on Tower Road South, which are due to complete in March.
Cllr Cherry Povall JP, Cllr Janette Williamson, James Whittaker Executive Development Director for Peel L&P, Cllr Anita Leech, and Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram at the ground breaking ceremony for hythe at Wirral Waters Construction has begun on new Grade A business offices that form part of the Wirral Waters masterplan. The new business hub, named Hythe – after the Old English for ‘a landing place or small harbour for ships or boats’ - is the first speculative office development in Birkenhead for a decade, offering over 25,000 sq ft of flexible, high-quality office space for local businesses. Developers Peel L&P say that The Hythe name has been chosen to describe this next generation office space, which uses contemporary design to maximise the health and wellbeing of customers, “offering a haven for entrepreneurs in the heart of Wirral Waters”.
Developer – General Projects
Planner – Deloitte Real Estate
General Projects, a London-based developer that specialises in “creative modern marketplaces”, envisages a hub that would bring together more than 100 small-and-medium-sized businesses with larger, blue-chip companies.
The 325,000 sq ft scheme on Pollard Street would be the developer’s first in Manchester. Under the proposals, General Projects would construct five buildings containing a mix of office space ranging from micro-units to grade A ‘innovation’ offices, intended to appeal to ambitious start-ups, fast-growing SMEs and more established businesses.
The buildings would be located alongside the Ashton Canal and designed by architect Hawkins\Brown and landscape architect Planit-IE, with inspiration taken from Manchester’s heritage cotton and textile mills.
