Bonus strike at Rand Water is off after court declares it unprotected 12 May 2021 - 11:39 Image: ANTONIO MUCHAVE The planned strike at Rand Water will not go ahead on Thursday after the employer obtained a labour court order stopping union members from downing tools. Employees had planned to embark on a strike after the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) issued a certificate of non-resolution to a dispute declared by the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) on April 28. Rand Water, the utility which supplies water to Gauteng and other provinces, had issued a circular in April informing employees of the removal of incentive bonuses for employees.

Cops to escort Metrobus drivers amid threats from striking workers By Itumeleng Mafisa Share Johannesburg - Metrobus workers were expected back at work on Thursday after remaining at the depots on Wednesday and did not work following reports of intimidation on non-striking working drivers by those on strike. Metrobus officials were locked in a meeting with police on Wednesday trying to come up with a safety plan that would ensure drivers are safe. A spokesperson for Metrobus, Goodwill Shiburi said the buses would get back on the road today accompanied by police inside and behind the buses. Metrobus had received several reports of threats and intimidating calls to workers.

Kouga municipality dragged the union to court after days of protests over the workers’ demand for a R1,500 Covid-19 danger allowance. In March, the municipality successfully interdicted Samwu from continuing with its strike action described by the municipality as unprotected that resulted in rubbish being strewn in the streets in Jeffreys Bay.
