Beijing Needs to Change Course to Improve Sino–US Ties: Senior Administration Officials As Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan go into talks with their Chinese counterparts in Alaska this week, Washington wants to see “deeds, not words” from Beijing if it wants to improve ties, according to senior administration officials. Chicago Mayor Defends Spending $281 Million in COVID-19 Federal Funding On Police

Chicago Mayor Defends Spending $281 Million in COVID-19 Federal Funding on Police The mayor of Chicago on Feb. 19 said criticism over the city’s spending of nearly $300 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds on the Chicago Police Department was “dumb.” “Criticism comes with the job of mayor, but this one’s just dumb,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, told reporters in a briefing. Last year, the city’s budget director told officials that none of the federal money was used for the police department. But Chicago’s Office of Budget and Management confirmed on Feb. 18 that the city was permitted by federal authorities to use $470 million for personnel costs. Over half of that chunk $281 million went to the police.
