Over the past year, UNK and many internal and external organizations have been working to make sure students and community members have their basic needs met. Two of UNK’s largest student groups collaborated to address campus food insecurity.
The food drive was incorporated into Greek Week, lasting from March 22-26. With about 900 students in the athletics department and FSL combined, the food drive had plenty of willing hands to participate throughout the week.
After getting the players in place the next order of business was informing the Kearney area.
“We had a flyer that was used on social media and sent out to relevant leaders in the community to spread the word,” Hassenstab said.

The Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council at Washington State were recently recognized as the 2021 Council Compass Highest Achievers and earned top awards given by the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV).
The Interfraternity Council at Washington State, which oversees 25 fraternities, received the Jellison Award named for Dr. Bill Jellison and recognizes outstanding Interfraternity Councils in the nation. The Panhellenic Association at Washington State, consisting of 14 organizations, received the Sutherland Award named after Ms. Shelley Sutherland which is among the highest level of council achievements for Panhellenic Councils.
The Council Compass awards presented by the AFLV recognize the top performing councils across the country. To be recognized, a council must earn a combined highest achievement score in the four directional areas: accountability, collaboration, education and innovation.
The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is exploring new initiatives to mitigate risk surrounding Covid-19 following a March 13 St. Patrick’s Day party attended by members of at least three Fraternity & Sorority Life organizations. Images surfaced from that day and published in The DePaulia show that the party was held outdoors, but violated Covid-19 safety guidelines..

When presented with a challenge in life, we are often compelled to choose the easy or hard route. The easy route usually offers little resistance, no opportunities for growth and allows the status quo to remain in place. The hard route, or road less taken, isn’t meant to be easy but it is filled with adversity that builds character and enables positive, sustainable change.
This week, we saw the women of Alpha Phi choose to take the road less traveled, and I couldn’t be any more proud of them than I already am. They knew it wouldn’t be easy or popular, but believed that their work was necessary to create the community we are continuously striving to be within Fraternity & Sorority Life at The Flagship. A community where seeking knowledge supersedes the fear of making a mistake when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion.
