In mid-January, science education professor Al Schademan received one of around 2,000 emails sent to faculty, student employees and essential staff at California State University, Chico. The email contained a surprise for Schademan: He would be among the first higher education employees in California to gain coveted access to the coronavirus vaccine.  Within a couple weeks, Schademan was climbing a back stairway at the 298-bed Enloe Medical Center, where in a room above the hospital cafe he received his first shot of the Pfizer vaccine, an adventure he said felt like participating in a covert operation.

February 4, 2021 California’s private colleges and universities have won an important reprieve in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed state budget, gaining an extra year before facing possible financial sanctions for not admitting enough transfer students from a special program. The move, if upheld by the state legislature, would help the 71 independent colleges at a time when some of their enrollments and finances are being slammed by the pandemic. It also could help keep low-income students at those schools since their financial aid might have been reduced by as much as $1,028 a year without Newsom’s proposed delay, officials say.

California s higher education leaders pledge to improve transfers from community colleges

California’s legislative and higher education leaders on Wednesday committed to increase the number of students who can transfer from the state’s community colleges to universities this year. They made their remarks in an online forum organized by members of the state Assembly to explore what the Legislature could do to improve transfer rates.   The forum was convened as part of an ongoing series of conversations convened by Assemblyman Marc Berman, who heads the Select Committee on the Master Plan for Higher Education in California. Thousands of students each year aim to make the transition from California’s community colleges to one of the nine undergraduate campuses of the University of California, the 23 campuses of California State University or private universities each year.  But many don’t make it.
