An analysis of the affidavits filed by 6,318 candidates in the Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal (till Phase-III) has revealed that 1,157 of them have criminal cases against them, according to the National Election Watch (NEW) and Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).
The number of candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves amount to 18% of the total affidavits analysed. There are 632 candidates with serious criminal cases. Details of 474 candidates could not be analysed due to unclear affidavits available on the Election Commission websites, said the report released on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Twitter announced a series of initiatives in several Indian languages on Monday in a bid to encourage “healthy” conversations ahead of the assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
The platform will publish a series of “pre-bunk” to tackle misinformation regarding EVMs, VVPATs, postal ballots, Covid-19 related restrictions, among other issues. The information will be based on inputs provided by civil society groups, including Youth Ki Awaaz and Association of Democratic Reforms.
The information will be available in six languages: Assamese, Bengali, English, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil.
Additionally, the platform will host a series of political discussions under two hashtags #DemocracyAdda and #HerPoliticalJourney. These initiatives will promote civic participation among young Indians and the political journeys of women leaders and stories of their struggles and triumphs.
Twitter India has activated Assembly election-related services in English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Assamese and Malayalam.
The micro-blogging platform’s initiative with the Election Commission of India and State Election Commissions is aimed at tackling misinformation and providing reliable details related to elections. With Assembly elections coming up in five States, micro-blogging platform Twitter on Monday announced a dedicated ‘information search prompt’ in six languages with the Election Commission of India and State Election Commissions to tackle misinformation and provide reliable details related to elections.
The U.S.-headquartered firm has also rolled out a multilingual youth discussion series in India ‘DemocracyAdda’ aimed at driving voter literacy and civic participation among young Indians, along with a video series ‘HerPoliticalJourney’ that will focus on women political leaders.
