The Human Rights Council this morning began its high-level segment, hearing addresses by dignitaries from 21 countries.
States outlined their national efforts to promote and protect human rights, challenges facing the multilateral order, and human rights violations globally. Many dignitaries highlighted the scale and scope of the challenges that States faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the deteriorating situation of refugees around the world. They outlined their national programmes in combatting COVID-19 and concurred that global challenges such as the pandemic required a multilateral response. In that light, the role of the Council was more important than ever. Indonesia, Malaysia want ASEAN emergency meet on Myanmar
Kuala Lampur, Feb 5 (UNI) Prime Ministers of Indonesia and Malaysia said on Friday that they would seek an emergency meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) foreign ministers regarding the military coup in Myanmar.
Malaysia’s Muhyiddin Yassin was quoted as saying by the national news agency Bernama We fear that the political coup in Myanmar may have an impact on the regional peace and stability.
The prime ministers said they had asked their top diplomats to contact ASEAN’s rotating chairperson in Brunei regarding the meeting.

House Deputy Speaker Bagong Henerasyon (BH) party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera said Sunday economic Charter change could potentially erase the phenomena of forced migration among Filipino jobseekers.
“By opening up the economy to foreign investors, we will be bringing the opportunities closer to Filipinos, which means they don’t need to work overseas because high-paying jobs will be available for them here,” said Herrera.
Herrera said the economic Cha-cha proposed by Speaker Lord Allan Velasco under Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No. 2 would help attract foreign direct investments (FDI) which will translate to more decent jobs and stronger local economy.
