YANGON - Myanmar authorities are seeking to file charges of murder and treason against one of the main leaders of the protest campaign against military rule, the state broadcaster said on Wednesday (April 28).
Wai Moe Naing was arrested on April 15 when security men rammed him with a car as he led a motorbike protest rally in the central town of Monywa.
Myanmar Television, in its main evening news bulletin, broadcast a list of charges being sought against him, including murder and treason, that it said had been filed with police.
Myanmar’s junta said Tuesday it will heed regional pleas to stop violence only when the coup-hit country “returns to stability”, as fresh fighting erupted with a major ethnic rebel group along its eastern border

Japan s parliament approved joining the world s largest free-trade deal, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, on Wednesday as signatories aim for it to come into effect from the start of next year.
The approval by Japan s upper house comes after the lower house gave the green light earlier this month and a day after China called for the deal to be ratified to shore up the economy in the Asia-Pacific.

YANGON, April 28 Myanmar’s pro-democracy unity government, which includes members of parliament ousted by the military coup, has told South-east Asia’s regional bloc that it will not engage in talks until the junta releases all political prisoners.
The 10-member Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) has been trying to find a path for Myanmar out of a bloody crisis triggered by the February 1 coup and has called for an end to violence and talks between all sides.

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic, Cambodia s economy in 2020 registered its slowest growth since 1994. However, the country s growth is projected to rebound 3.5 per cent this year, thanks to its newly-signed bilateral free trade agreement with China and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
A government report showed that the Southeast Asian nation s economy shrank 1.9 per cent last year, to US$27.6bil.
Despite the pandemic, Cambodia s total trade volume reached $35.8 billion in 2020, up 2.5 per cent from a year earlier. The GDP growth in 2021 is forecast to rebound 3.5 per cent this year, said the government report.
