After the successful first manned space flight by Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, earning the title of ‘First Cosmonaut’, he visited Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) eight months later on December 7, 1961.
The year 2021 marks 60 years since this historic moment and the Russian House in Colombo and the Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society have jointly organized a special Stamp and Photographic Exhibition on April 6, 7 and 8 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s Space Flight and Visit to Ceylon.
More than a thousand rare and original postage stamps on the first manned space mission and exploration will be on display for public viewing at the Russian House in Colombo.
Medical experts disapprove using Sinopharm vaccine on Sri Lankans

Senior medical practitioners both in the government and private sectors have expressed concerns over using 600,000 vaccines given to Sri Lanka.
The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) in a statement signed by AMS President, Consultant Surgeon Dr. Lalantha Ranasinghe said that an independent panel of experts was appointed by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) to review all submissions related to candidate vaccines and provide scientific advice for emergency use approval in Sri Lanka.

The pioneering Cardiologist Dr Narendradas Jayaratnam Wallooppillai, affectionately referred to as “Walloops” by his friends, who succumbed to heart failure on 6th January 2011, surely deserves the title ‘The Father of Cardiology in Sri Lanka’ because it was during his tenure that Cardiology came to its own as a speciality. However, he was not the first to head the Cardiology Unit of the General hospital, Colombo. That distinction goes to Dr Ivor Obeysekara who, in spite of fighting against all odds to establish a dedicated Cardiology Unit, took early retirement and left for Australia. Dr Obeysrekara’s tenure was short, not having sufficient time to develop the speciality, the Cardiology Unit functioning as a Cardiology ward during his time.
