Workers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have suspended the industrial action they embarked upon on Thursday, January 7, 2021, over the spread of COVID-19. According to Punch, the workers decided to put the strike on hold after a meeting with the Federal Government, where it was agreed that the demands of the employees would be addressed. Confirming the suspension of the strike, Asekokhai Lucky, the President, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC Unit, said workers of the commission across the country were being contacted to resume work by Monday and begin the enrolment of citizens for National Identity Numbers.

The notice of strike was signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor. It read in part, “Consequent upon the just concluded congress of the above mentioned association that took place on January 6, 2020, the unit executive directs all members of grade level 12 and below in the head office and state offices to report to their respective duty posts tomorrow January 7, 2020 and do nothing.

The association also advised all members in the local government offices and special centres to stay away from the various centres as the association task force and implementation committee would be on ground to ensure compliance. In a communiqué signed by the Chairman, ASCSN, NIMC unit, Asekohai Lucky, the association asked all staff to report to their duty posts but do nothing. NewsWireNGR gathered that the grouse of the union against the Federal Government bordered on the state of NIMC enrolment centres across the country, especially in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Association said staff of the Agency have been infected with COVID-19 and the Federal government have not taken adequate measures to curtail the spread and ensure the safety essential staff at enrollment centres.
