Arab countries in the Gulf were set to mark Yom HaShoah this week with participation from young Muslims, the first such event since a historic peace accord with Israel.
The young people from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were to share their experiences of visiting Yad Vashem and learning for the first time about the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Thursday night’s event will also include input from the growing Jewish communities of the Gulf region, who will discuss how Jews and Muslims can work together to create a new Middle East.
“It is truly remarkable that we can celebrate Yom HaShoah so openly this year in the Gulf – both as the broader Jewish community of the Gulf and in our individual communities,” said Elie Abadie, the rabbi of the Association of Gulf Jewish Communities, which is organising the event.

Jews and Muslims in the Gulf will hold ceremonies to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day today and tomorrow, concurrently with Yom Hashoah being held in Israel.
According to Channel 12 news, it will be the first time Yom Hashoah is officially marked in an Arab country.
The network says a ceremony will be held in Dubai tonight with a delegation of Jewish and Arab Israelis. Several dozen social media influencers in the Gulf will join them and organizers hope they will pass on the stories of survival and remembrance.
Tomorrow evening the Association of Gulf Jewish Communities will host a webinar with young Muslims from the UAE and Bahrain “who will discuss their experiences visiting Yad Vashem,” the group says.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned the UAE event during his speech at Israel’s official ceremony in Jerusalem.
Speaking of Israel’s normalization agreements with the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan, Netanyahu said “there is a tremendous change in the Arab world” and noted the Holocaust remembrance ceremony being held in Dubai.
“Who would have believed?” he said.
The ceremony in Dubai included a delegation of Jewish and Arab Israelis, Channel 12 reported. Several dozen social media influencers in the Gulf were to join them and organizers said they hoped they would pass on the stories of survival and remembrance.
In both Dubai and Bahrain, the ceremonies were also part of the Yellow Candle Project, a global community campaign to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust.
