Man who had sexual assault charges controversially dropped jailed on new charges
Updated May 04, 2021;
The son of a former county official, who in 2017 was charged with sexual assault in a case that sparked a feud between State Police and local prosecutors, will remain jailed as new sexual assault charges against him are pending.
Ian Schweizer, 38, will remain jailed in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Institute in Sussex County following a Tuesday morning hearing. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of aggravated assault, and simple assault stemming from an April 21 incident in Sandyston.
Although he is being held in Sussex County, Schweizer is being charged by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
N.J. spending millions to negotiate abuse lawsuits from women’s prison, records show
Updated 8:17 AM;
The problems in New Jersey’s only women’s prison are costing taxpayers.
The state will likely spend almost $2.8 million on outside lawyers amid several lawsuits alleging abuse behind bars, according to public records.
That’s on top of nearly $21 million taxpayers will have to pay out if a court ultimately approves a settlement for former prisoners, including more than 20 women who said they were sexually abused at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Hunterdon County.
Those numbers are in addition to hundreds of thousands of dollars paid to another outside advisor in the wake of a federal inquiry, and any money eventually spent on new lawsuits filed since several women said they were severely beaten by staff in January, an incident that has already led to charges against 10 officers.

The Bergen County woman said she thought her troubles had ended last May when she took refuge in her car after an altercation at her then-boyfriend s home in Vernon.
But as she settled into her vehicle for the night, she heard a knock on the window, she said in a lawsuit filed last week in Sussex County.
The knock was allegedly a prelude to a sexual assault by a Vernon Township police officer, Emanuel Rivera, who now faces criminal charges over the May 2020 incident. In the suit filed in state Superior Court, his alleged victim says the encounter has left her with lasting emotional trauma.
