So what does genocide mean according to international public law? The term genocide was coined in 1944 by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish lawyer of Jewish descent. At the end of 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed Resolution 260 A, Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide .The treaty became effective in January 1951. Article 2 of the legal document clearly defines acts of genocide, stating that any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, constitutes genocide: killing members of such a group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction i
