Emirates Literature Foundation partners with Google to put global focus on Arab authors
DUBAI, 15th December, 2020 (WAM) The Emirates Literature Foundation, together with Google, has launched Kateb Maktub , an initiative that will vastly increase the presence and visibility of Arab authors online, ahead of World Arabic Language Day.
The initiative is designed to boost the number of Arab author pages on Wikipedia, one of the world s most visited websites with more than 1 billion visitors per month.
Arab authors currently have fewer than 1,500 pages on Wikipedia, lagging far behind author pages in languages such as English, German, or French. This puts writers from the region at a disadvantage, since they are not as easily discovered as their international peers. The initiative aims to increase the number of Arab author pages tenfold.

How Russia worked to undermine UN bioweapons investigations
This past October, while much of the world’s focus was on the raging coronavirus pandemic and the US presidential election, Russian diplomats introduced a highly controversial resolution to the General Assembly of the United Nations, one that would have weakened the 40-year-old mandate of the UN secretary-general to investigate allegations of chemical or biological weapons use.
To anybody paying attention, the “why” behind the resolution was obvious. Independent technical investigations have been shown to work in practice, and Moscow wanted to wrest back control over future international investigations by putting the UN Security Council, where Russia has veto power, in charge.
