(Eishia Hudson/Facebook) About 300 people attended a vigil in Winnipeg to honour a 16-year old girl who was fatally shot by a Winnipeg police officer a year ago Thursday. Memorials are being held in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax Thursday evening to honour the life of Eishia Hudson, who died on April 8, 2020.  The family is doing fairly well, said Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Arlen Dumas.

Vigil held for Eishia Hudson one year after she was shot and killed by police

WINNIPEG One year after 16-year-old Eishia Hudson was shot and killed by a Winnipeg police officer – her father said he is still waiting for change. Around 300 people gathered at a vigil for Hudson at the Odena Circle at The Forks Thursday evening. My daughter didn t deserve what happened to her. You know what – no child deserves that, Hudson s father William said at the vigil. It is why we are here today, and it is why we got to continue to do what we do. Along with songs performed by the Whitehorse and Southern Thunderbird Medicine Drum Groups, and jingle dress dancers, there was a moment of silence held for Hudson at 6:10 p.m.

Time for politicians to tone it down

Winnipeg Free Press By: Royce Koop I DON’T usually watch debates in the Manitoba legislature. But I did watch last Thursday as the government introduced Bill 56, a bill that would have the effect of restricting smoking and vaping on First Nations and which will almost certainly be challenged in the courts. Opinion I DON’T usually watch debates in the Manitoba legislature. But I did watch last Thursday as the government introduced Bill 56, a bill that would have the effect of restricting smoking and vaping on First Nations and which will almost certainly be challenged in the courts. The conduct in the legislature over the reading of this bill was strikingly combative and hostile. The best comparison I can make is to sittings of the House of Commons just prior to a federal election, when MPs tend to be rambunctious and combative, testing out speaking lines and thumping their chests in anticipation of a hard-fought election.
