Newsom, legislators at odds over plan to reopen California schools - The San Diego Union-Tribune

SACRAMENTO    Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday criticized a $6.6-billion legislative proposal to begin opening more elementary campuses in April, a plan he said fell short as negotiations between him and lawmakers have so far failed to result in a compromise. The legislative proposal would require county health departments to make COVID-19 vaccinations available to school employees who will work on campus, but does not explicitly say doses would be offered to staff before in-person learning resumes a sequence pushed by the California Teachers Assn. Newsom has repeatedly argued against guaranteed vaccinations for teachers before in-person education resumes, saying the state does not currently have enough supply to inoculate teachers without making older and vulnerable Californians move further down the priority list.

Low-income Californians to receive $600 state stimulus, Newsom and legislative leaders announce

Low-income Californians to receive $600 state stimulus, Newsom and legislative leaders announce Patrick McGreevy, Los Angeles Times Feb. 17, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail SACRAMENTO, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders announced Wednesday that they have agreed to provide low-income Californians a $600 state stimulus payment to help them weather financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, part of a $9.6 billion economic recovery package that also includes $2.1 billion in grants for small businesses. The Golden State stimulus payments provided under the state proposal, which will be expedited for legislative approval next week, are in addition to the $600-per-person stimulus checks already approved by Congress and would be on top of direct payments of up to $1,400 per person that have been proposed by House Democrats.
