Gov. Phil Murphy and the state’s top lawmakers said on May 14 that they intend to lift the COVID-19 public health emergency after extending it one final time.
The goal, Murphy and several top Democratic lawmakers said on Friday, is that the order would be lifted in exchange for a bill enacted in the next month that would keep in place some of the governor’s powers granted under the public health emergency.
“In order to continue on the path to normalcy, we need all available resources to continue our progress in vaccinating New Jerseyans and finally beating back this pandemic,” Murphy said in a statement.

Female lawmakers and pro-choice advocates in New Jersey have warned that abortion rights are under threat since the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg eight months ago and the appointment of conservative jurist Amy Coney Barrett to replace her.
On Monday, those concerns intensified after the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would review Mississippi’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case strikes at the heart of Roe V. Wade, the landmark case that established a woman’s right to an abortion in 1973 and is the first abortion case for the nation’s highest court since former President Trump appointed three conservative justices.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Masks are still required indoors in New Jersey, Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday, but he and the Democrats who control the Legislature said they plan to end the public health emergency granting him vast powers by next month.
Murphy s announcement that the state will retain an indoor mask requirement because of COVID-19 butts up against federal guidance from Thursday saying that vaccinated Americans can ditch masks outdoors and in many indoor situations.

With New Jersey’s COVID-19 numbers significantly improving as vaccinations continue, Gov. Phil Murphy and top state lawmakers announced Friday they are working on a plan to finally end the public-health emergency the governor declared in the state 14 months ago to help battle the coronavirus.
Murphy signed an executive order Friday extending the emergency another 30 days. But he said he will let it expire next month if the state Legislature passes legislation before then to make sure the state has the “tools and flexibility” it needs to keep combatting the pandemic and rolling out vaccinations.
