At Community Board 3’s parks committee meeting last week, city designers showed off the latest renderings for the renovation of Luther Gulick Park. A community organization, the Friends of Gulick Park, has been advocating and fundraising for the project during the past five years. Originally, it was thought that the job would need to be completed in phases. But now all the money required for the revamp has been allocated, so the Parks Department can do everything at once.
The park, located at Delancey and Willett streets, has suffered from years of neglect. The new renderings presented last week fill out the play area in the southeast corner of the park, near Columbia Street. There are separate sections for children ages 2-5 and 5-12. Dave Bolotsky, founder of the community organization, said members are generally pleased with the design, although they hoped the climbing equipment for older kids would be a bit taller. Here s a scenario that could play out in the coming weeks: the various state and federal investigations into Gov. Andrew Cuomo could determine he’s acted inappropriately, but lack the proof needed to take further action against him. All eyes and especially those of the governor’s critics would very likely turn to the Assembly, which has launched an impeachment investigation into the governor.

NEW YORK Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has been released from a federal prison on furlough while he awaits potential placement to home confinement, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
He has been released to his home while awaiting a final decision on whether he can serve the rest of his sentence there in home confinement, the person said. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity.
The federal Bureau of Prisons didn t provide details or a reason for the transfer, but Congress gave the Justice Department expanded powers during the coronavirus pandemic to release inmates on furlough and home confinement to prevent them from catching the virus behind bars.

Luther Gulick Park; October 2013.
A nearly five-year-old effort to revitalize a neglected public space on the Lower East Side is receiving a big boost. State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver announced today that $2.5 million has been awarded to Luther Gulick Park for its restoration. The new funding comes from the state Department of Transportation.
Community activists formed an organization known as the Friends of Gulick Park several years ago. They have held numerous community-building activities, including tree and flower plantings, in the park, which is located alongside the Williamsburg Bridge at Willett Street. Most important, the group successfully raised $3 million from several sources, including the New York City Council and the Manhattan Borough President’s office. After several neighborhood visioning sessions, the Parks Department came up with a rehabilitation plan, a drawing of which you can see below.
