CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) is making a big change to its organization to keep up with recent growth.
The LAJC has named its former managing attorney Elaine Poon as its first-ever Deputy Director for Advocacy. The change was made in part due to the amount and type of work the center has taken on in recent years. In the new job, Poon will help set the vision and direction for the organization, while making sure it is cohesive in working to advance the LAJC’s mission.

As many Virginians struggle to make rent amid the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, state lawmakers will consider more legislation during their latest session to help people keep their homes.
The General Assembly has already approved several bills to prevent evictions. One major measure, approved during a special session in late 2020, forces landlords to offer tenants payment plans if they’re behind on rent.
The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Monday in an immigration case that originated in Virginia. The crux of the case: whether some undocumented immigrants in federal custody can be released on bond.

Another one of our clients it was opposition to the criminal gangs that had taken over their neighborhood,” he explains. “They experience some sort of persecution that requires them to flee to the United States again.”
