Wallace Mazon s attorneys showed up to court prepared to present witnesses and evidence in his defense. As it turns out, they didn t need to. Mazon, 26, was arrested early on the morning of June 3 at an apartment building near the state Capitol and charged with interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor. He was one of more than 100 people to face charges in Polk County related to the protests that followed the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man, in police custody in May 2020. Although many of the cases arising from the Floyd protests have since been dismissed, Mazon, represented by the student attorneys of the Drake University Legal Clinic, went to trial. And on March 3, after prosecutors presented testimony from two officers and rested their case, the defense made a motion for a directed verdict, asking the judge to find there was insufficient evidence to pursue the case.
