Over a quarter of law graduates are unemployed or have jobs that do not require a degree more than a year after leaving university, according to figures published by the education watchdog. However the percentage varies widely between universities.
A survey by the Office for Students found that 26% of UK-domiciled people who completed an undergraduate law degree in 2017-18 have not ‘progressed’ since leaving university. Progression rates are based on the proportion of graduates engaged in professional employment, further study, caring duties or travelling. 5,560 law graduates responded to the survey 15 months after graduating.

I am currently a senior associate in the patent litigation team at Bristows. I have a technical background, so I tend to focus on cases in the telecoms and engineering sphere.
After graduating with an MSci in physics from Imperial College London, I did a vacation placement at a London firm that had a strong intellectual property (IP) presence at the time.
After that I applied for training contracts and, luckily, secured my training contract at Bristows a few weeks before I was due to head off travelling for six months. On my return, I did my Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course at BPP in London and started at Bristows in September 2009.

Online exams are to become a permanent fixture of legal training, the Solicitors Regulation Authority has decided.
The SRA board agreed last month that providers of the Legal Practice Course (LPC) can provide remote proctoring – which allows candidates to complete exams on their home computer – on a permanent basis, providing they meet regulatory requirements. The decision follows ‘positive’ feedback after LPC assessments moved online last year.
‘Our work to date has found that while there have been some one-off issues with remote proctoring, overall, the experience has been positive,’ the SRA said. It added that law schools must offer a choice between taking the assessment at home and at an exam centre.
