Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lost a crucial election as India’s Covid crisis deepens, with an official in his Bharatiya Janata Party conceding defeat in the populous state of West Bengal. Modi had been widely criticized for continuing to hold mass rallies in the state as infections rose.
Talks starting this week between the U.S. and the World Trade Organization over expanding access to vaccines will focus on how to get them “widely distributed, more widely licensed, more widely shared,” according to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain. U.S. cases dropped to 45,236, the fewest on a Saturday since late September.

On the advice of the International Olympic Committee s (IOC) Athletes Commission, the IOC Executive Board last week resolved to continue to censor athletes who participate in peaceful protest at the Olympic Games, especially in the most powerful spaces of the podium and the arena. Patronisingly, the censorship is now coupled with scripting, with the IOC endorsing the use of the words, peace, respect, solidarity, inclusion and equality.
In the words of Bernice King, chief executive of the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inclusion does not = equity. Diversity does not = justice. Tolerance does not = love. Silence does not = peace.

A social media post by China’s top law enforcement body juxtaposing the country’s successful launch of a module into space with grim cremation pyres in India was deleted after it sparked online criticism in China.
Photos of the Tianhe module launch and its fuel burn-off were compared with what appeared to be a mass outdoor cremation in India, and captioned “China lighting a fire versus India lighting a fire.” The post on Saturday by the Communist Party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission on its official Sina Weibo account was accompanied by a hashtag noting that new Covid-19 cases in Indian had surpassed 400,000 a day.
