Lingering ethics reform packages don t give Illinois Legislative Inspector General independence

Normal, IL, USA / www.cities929.com May 6, 2021 | 4:24 PM (The Center Square) – The Illinois Senate adjourned for the week without passing onto the House a bill to bring about ethics reforms, but work continues. One thing left out of the package is giving the Legislative Inspector General independence to investigate claims of wrongdoing brought against lawmakers. State Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Evergreen Park, said the package of reforms in Senate Bill 4 addresses lobbyist registration, a revolving door prohibition and statements of economic interest. “So as we’ve had a lot of testimony, so has the Senate, so we’re trying to work together and try to work across the aisle and try to come up with some real meaningful changes,” Burke said.

Letter: Ethics reform in Illinois is a joke

Who do IL lawmakers think they are fooling? They don t really want ethics reforms, they just want to give it lip service to make it look like they want ethics reforms. When the Illinois Legislative Inspector General has to ask permission from the Legislative Ethics Commission to investigate or even issue subpoenas, all she is doing is alerting Commission members that they need to let their buddies know they need to lay low. What a JOKE!!! The Legislative Inspector General is supposed to be an independent body, but let’s face facts, the position is nothing more than lip service from IL lawmakers. We may as well not even have the position! As much as the Inspector General, Carol Pope, wants to do her job, she is being held back from the very people she is there to investigate when something is reported.

Seems to be several Fed investigations, that have something to do. Maybe also put the office in a location not very visible to legislators… Every public servant in management or decision making capacities has hear the trope “perception is reality.” The question has always been how to deal with that perception. Do you do something that wastes taxpayer money to deal with a perception or do you try and change that perception? Obviously, the specific approach varies depending on the facts involved. All to often when politicians are involved the easy answer is to make it look like you are doing something regardless of efficacy.

Illinois lawmakers fall short on ethics reform in latest Springfield session

Getty Images Corruption happens when people make bad decisions and are willing to disregard the law, state Rep. Ann Williams said at a recent House Ethics & Elections Committee hearing. Williams said she was trying to understand what would make a difference, adding, I just, again, have trouble finding a nexus between some of these issues . . . and the problems that we re really facing in terms of restoring our faith in government. Yes, corruption and fraud happen when people make bad decisions. Yet it s evident from the many public officials indicted in recent years that stronger ethics regulations are needed to discourage people with bad intentions.
