The early spring sunshine and mild temperatures seen over the past few days are set to come to an abrupt end this week, as a cold trough of air moves in from the north, followed by a second bout of low pressure. The latest weather charts forecast the mercury is set to plunge to lows of -5C from late Thursday. The chilly conditions also brings an increased risk of snow, with parts of the UK forecast for some wintry showers.

The Met Office has issued five weather warnings for wind and rain over the next 24 hours, with the North West and Scotland likely to see the worst of the conditions. They include two “danger to life” amber alerts for central and eastern areas of Scotland, with the Met Office warning homes and businesses are likely to be flooded. Strong winds and heavy rain are set to engulf large parts of the UK over the next 48 hours as jet stream heads towards the UK. Weather charts show swirling winds circulating in the Irish Sea as an area of low-pressure closes-in from the Atlantic. Maps show a dark-red area forming along the west coast of Britain and it has triggered a series of weather warnings.

At 6pm on Saturday, the chart shows the south east can expect highs of 13C, while other parts of the country see an average of 10C. Temperature maps by WXCharts also show the mercury is expected to rise to 13C by Saturday evening.
