On May 18, voters in Eugene School District 4j will have the opportunity to choose among the candidates for three seats on the board.
The race for Position 3 features two newcomers to elective politics taking on an incumbent. The race for Position 6 has only one candidate, hoping to replace veteran Jim Torrey, who was appointed to fill a seat unexpectedly vacated mid-term. (A second candidate for Position 6 dropped out too late for his name to be deleted from the ballot.) Two new candidates vie for Position 2. Congressman Peter DeFazio facilitated a virtual roundtable with local leaders April 7 to discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on transportation and modernizing transit infrastructure in Eugene and surrounding areas.
“Transit was incredibly hard hit by the pandemic,” DeFazio said during the roundtable. “We actually had transit workers contract COVID and died.” He said in addition, transit services also saw huge revenue drops as people stayed home and stopped using transportation.
Transportation services around the country received funding from the American Rescue Plan, a COVID relief bill passed in March. While the bill provided funding for things like small businesses and individual stimulus checks, it also covers other aspects of transportation including roads, bridges, rail and wastewater, DeFazio said.

Eugene residents have mixed feelings about new Santa Clara bus station
The new station will replace the nearly 40 year old River Road station.

EUGENE, Ore. Lane Transit District began boarding bus passengers at the new Santa Clara Station on Sunday. The construction for this project began last May.
“We have six new bus bays, including one bus bay set aside for our paratransit service. Also, there’s 16 bus lockers,” said Lane Transit District spokesperson Pat Walsh. “We think this is really going to become a cornerstone for the Santa Clara neighborhood.”
