Four-year-old Sierra Sanford raised her empty paint bucket up against an old oak tree and, with a little help from her mom and grandma, gently scraped gooey, whitish globs  a.k.a gypsy moth egg masses from the bark with a soft putty knife. The three generations Sierra, her mom Sharon Sanford of Middlesex, and Sierra’s grandmother, Pamela Bayer of Bloomfield, were among more than 25 volunteers who gathered Saturday at the Bare Hill Unique Area for the first of three events to put a dent in the gypsy moth caterpillar population. Last year’s explosion of the leaf-eating caterpillars stripped thousands of trees on public and private lands all across the region. To combat another outbreak this year, the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association is holding Gypsy Moth Scout & Scrape-a-thons to remove egg masses from heavily infested areas.
