Council supports amendment allowing 5G antennas, Katz concerned

share this Most of the Montgomery County Council supports a zoning amendment to allow 5G antennas in residential neighborhoods throughout the county. Council Member Hans Riemer has spent about five years working on the issue, and has argued that small cell antennas provide better internet service for those without broadband or fiber cable in their homes. Riemer and his colleagues discussed the proposal Tuesday, as the amendment might finally reach a final vote in the coming months. Another work session is scheduled for July 13. A vote could occur the next time it appears on the council agenda. The council’s summer recess is from Aug. 2 to Sept. 12.

Council Member Nancy Navarro, who has held the seat since 2009, can’t run for re-election because of term limits. Navarro said she is still deciding what her next career step might be and has set a deadline of around September. She has not ruled out a run for county executive or a state or federal office. Navarro, who previously served five years on the Board of Education, said, “Everything is still in play, because obviously, after so many years of having the honor to serve on the Board of Education [and] County Council … I still would want to play a role in public service and policy. I’m also being approached in other sectors, so I need to see what makes more sense for me and my family.”

‘You Have Done Us A Great Service’: Council Lauds Retiring School Superintendent Smith Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Smith was praised for his leadership through the pandemic and his push for equity for all students as his June 1 retirement date nears. Members of the Montgomery County Council May 19 gave their reluctant goodbyes and issued a proclamation in Smith’s honor. Smith has been superintendent since July of 2016 and prior to that was a classroom teacher, principal, curriculum director and interim state superintendent for Maryland Schools. Deputy Superintendent Monifa McKnight was named interim superintendent in March and will become acting superintendent June 1.
