Researchers with the city auditor s office have found that a system the Austin Police Department uses to signal when an officer may need additional support or guidance does not work, according to a report released Wednesday. “The Austin Police Department’s early intervention system does not fulfill its mission to effectively identify officers who may need assistance and connect officers to support services,” auditors wrote. Police departments across the U.S. employ what are called early intervention systems. These programs consider certain data points, such as how often an officer gets into a physical altercation while on the job, and then flag officers who may need additional training or counseling based on that data.

Austin Won t Make Arrests During First Phase Of Reinstating Rules Related To Homelessness

KUT Tents are set up outside Austin City Hall as part of a demonstration against Proposition B, which reinstated rules related to homelessness. After voters passed Proposition B on May 1, Austin is reinstating rules that ban homeless encampments on public land, prohibit sitting or lying down in parts of the city, and place a nighttime curfew on panhandling. While those rules go into effect Tuesday, the city said enforcement would be phased in. In an announcement Monday, the city said police won t ticket or arrest folks during an initial 30-day period unless there s an immediate threat to public health or safety. The city said officers will instead provide available resources and verbal warnings.
