UK immigration raids on nursing homes should stop

Campaign officer for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI), Mary Atkinson, said that the raids demonstrated just how ‘out of control the hostile environment has become.’ As well as the raids  on nursing homes, data reveals that the Home Office carried out more than 44,000 ‘intelligence-led’ UK immigration raids on private homes. However, less than one in six raids resulted in deportations, according to the JCWI.   Carers arrested mid-shiftMs Atkinson said: “Carers are being arrested in the middle of their shifts, often as they look after elderly and vulnerable people it is difficult to see who could possibly benefit from that.”

Home Office urged to stop immigration raids on nursing homes

THE HOME OFFICE was urged today to stop inflicting needless harm on communities after new data showed that 190 immigration raids on nursing homes resulted in only 37 care-staff deportations between 2015 and 2019. Moreover, during the same period, the Home Office conducted more than 44,000 “intelligence-led” immigration raids on private homes, yet fewer than one in six resulted in removals, according to data obtained by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI).  JCWI campaign officer Mary Atkinson said that the figures “show just how out of control the hostile environment has become.” “Carers are being arrested in the middle of their shifts, often as they look after elderly and vulnerable people it is difficult to see who could possibly benefit from that,” she said.

Migrants Are Scared to Get the Coronavirus Vaccine – and the Hostile Environment Is to Blame

Since last week that “those who are here illegally can come forward to receive a vaccine,” Ali , a Pakistani delivery driver in London, has been discussing the so-called amnesty with other migrants in a WhatsApp group. In the chat of more than 80 people – all of whom have precarious immigration status – Ali says that “everyone is scared to go and get the vaccine,” despite the government’s assurances.  These feelings reflect research published recently by the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI), which found that 43% of the migrants surveyed fear accessing healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic because of treatment charges or having their data shared with the Home Office – with data sharing being the predominant fear.
