Pen Sokunthea escaped the bustle of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, for the sleepy riverside town of Kampot two years ago, drawn by its tranquil charm and laid-back pace of life.
“I’m not a big city girl,” says Pen, who runs a cafe on the outskirts of the town 150km (90 miles) south of Phnom Penh, close to the coast. “I much prefer the peace and quiet, and Kampot is perfect for that.”
However, big changes are coming to the town, which is set to become Cambodia’s next tourism hotspot. As investment opportunities and development plans are unveiled, fears have been raised that Kampot’s tranquillity may be shattered.

Single Portal tallies 7,293 entries

The number of companies initiating the registration process on the government’s newly-launched e-Business Registration Platform has increased to 7,293, nearly seven months since the system went online.
Six ministries and state-run institutions have been integrated into a business registration system on the platform, also known as the Single Portal, which was launched on June 15 by government representatives.
The six ministries and state institutions listed in the system are the ministries of Interior; Economy and Finance; Commerce; and Labour and Vocational Training, as well as the General Department of Taxation and the Council for the Development of Cambodia.

Cambodia readies for EU meet on 7-year work plan

The Kingdom is set to host a consultative meeting with EU representatives and partners based in the country next month and prepare a 2021-2027 joint development cooperation plan that centres on market diversification, according to the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).
The remark was made at a January 11 meeting between the CDC’s Cambodian Rehabilitation and Development Board (CRDB) secretary-general Chheang Yanara and EU delegation to Cambodia’s head of cooperation Franck Viault, the CDC said in a statement.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed preparations for next month’s consultative meeting, which will address the drafts of the Joint European Development Cooperation Strategy for Cambodia for 2021-2027 and the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.
