My name is Madyson Gabriele and I recently graduated in May of 2020 with a degree in inclusive early childhood. I wanted to earn a college degree so I could become an intervention specialist to help students who have special needs. I selected this major because it has always been a passion of mine. I started helping in this field during my senior year in high school and fell in love with it!
Without the Thompson Working Families Scholarship, I would have had to take out multiple loans to attend BGSU. This could have set me back further after I graduated financially. By being able to get ahead, I was able to obtain my reading endorsement and put a down payment on a house! Without the Thompson Scholarship for Working Families, I would have an unwanted stress of student debt.

Garwood, who grew up in Saranac Lake and moved back with his family last year, recently saw the publication of a book he wrote about classroom management. “Reclaim Your Challenging Classroom” is intended to guide new and veteran teachers in developing effective classroom management techniques, with a particular focus on students with emotional or behavioral disorders and those experiencing trauma. This guide empowers teachers to create a positive and engaging learning environment that is grounded in the student-teacher relationship. Garwood is a professor of special education at the University of Vermont, where he teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels focused on behavior management, academic intervention and inclusion. He completed his doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and for two years prior to coming to UVM was an assistant professor at Appalachian State University. H

Alumni Distinguished Professor Antonis Katsiyannis has been named Clemson’s faculty athletic representative (FAR) by Clemson University President Jim Clements.
“Dr. Katsiyannis is an outstanding leader who cares deeply for our students. I worked with him previously when he was President of the Faculty Senate, and I saw firsthand his dedication and commitment to the University,” said President Jim Clements. “I am very thankful for Dr. Janie Hodge, and I appreciate her years of excellent service as our Faculty Athletics Representative. I know that Antonis will continue to ensure that our student-athletes excel in the classroom.”
The faculty athletic representative represents the University and its faculty in the University’s relationships with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). They must be a tenured associate or full professor who has served on Clemson’s faculty a minimum of ten years.
