Peer confidants at school may help teens with anxiety, depression: Study

Peer confidants at school may help teens with anxiety, depression: Study ANI | Updated: Jan 23, 2021 14:35 IST Washington [US], January 23 (ANI): Teen challenges including depression and anxiety are better understood by their peers as compared to teachers or counsellors in the school, believe three-quarters of parents in a new national poll. The majority also agree that peer support leaders at school would encourage more teens to talk with someone about their mental health problems. These are findings to C.S. Mott Children s Hospital National Poll on Children s Health at Michigan Medicine. Peers may provide valuable support for fellow teens struggling with emotional issues because they can relate to each other, says Mott Poll Co-Director Sarah Clark, M.P.H.

Researchers find better diet, glucose uptake in the brain lead to longer life in fruit flies

Looking at the brain cells of ageing flies, they found that better glucose uptake compensates for age-related deterioration in motor functions, and led to a longer life. The effect was more pronounced when coupled with dietary restrictions. This suggests healthier eating plus improved glucose uptake in the brain might lead to enhanced lifespans.

Researchers find a lot of brain real estate taken up when disagreeing

Researchers find a lot of brain real estate taken up when disagreeing ANI | Updated: Jan 16, 2021 19:57 IST Washington [US], January 16 (ANI): The findings of a recent study by Yale researchers suggest that when two people agree, their brains exhibit calm synchronicity of activity focused on sensory areas of the brain. When they disagree, however, many other regions of the brain involved in higher cognitive functions become mobilised as each individual combats the other s argument. The Yale-led research team reported the findings of the study in the journal Frontiers of Human Neuroscience. Our entire brain is a social processing network, said senior author Joy Hirsch, the Elizabeth Mears and House Jameson Professor of Psychiatry and professor of comparative medicine and neuroscience.

Research reveals how crop roots penetrate hard soils

Research reveals how crop roots penetrate hard soils ANI | Updated: Jan 15, 2021 23:16 IST Washington [US], January 15 (ANI): Scientists have discovered a signal that causes roots to stop growing in hard soils which can be switched off to allow them to punch through compacted soil - a discovery that could help plants to grow in even the most damaged soils. As per the findings published in the journal Science an international research team led by scientists from the University of Nottingham s Future Food Beacon and Shanghai, Jiao Tong University has discovered how the plant signal ethylene causes roots to stop growing in hard soils, but after this signal is disabled, roots are able to push through compacted soil. The research has been published in Science.

Study: Colleges can prevent 96 pc of COVID-19 infections with common measures

Study: Colleges can prevent 96 pc of COVID-19 infections with common measures ANI | Updated: Jan 13, 2021 17:02 IST Washington [US], January 13 (ANI): The combined effectiveness of three COVID-prevention strategies on college campuses mask-wearing, social distancing, and routine testing are as effective in preventing coronavirus infections as the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to a new study. The study was co-authored by a Case Western Reserve University researcher. The research, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, has immediate significance as college semesters are poised to start again and as the distribution of approved vaccines lags behind goals.
