Speaking ahead of the EU Porto Social Summit on May 7, Olivier De Schutter, Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, pointed out that with over 90 million people and almost 20 million children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the Union, plans to address it are “insufficiently ambitious”. Statement by Commissioner Nicolas Schmit ahead of International Workers Day

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC), gepubliceerd op vrijdag 30 april 2021. Ahead of International Workers Day, Commissioner Nicolas Schmit made the following statement: Tomorrow, as we mark International Workers Day, we take pause to think about the millions of people who have seen their lives and livelihoods disrupted by the COVID-19 crisis. So far, governments have managed to preserve jobs and contain a surge in unemployment. Short-time work schemes, supported through the EU s SURE instrument, have kept people in jobs and preserved families incomes. Even so, many workers, and especially the young generation, have seen their career prospects put at risk: some of them for the second time over the span of a decade, affected also by the financial crisis ten years ago.

Worker advocates call for more democracy at work ahead of Porto Summit – EURACTIV com

Trade unions and other labour supporters are continuing their push for greater worker involvement in company decisions, now labelling this as an effort for “more democracy at work.” They want to see this topic play a larger role on the EU’s agenda, particularly at the upcoming Porto Social Summit. This year should be “the year for more democracy at work,” the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) declared in a press release in March.  More specifically, this term means “informing, consulting, and allowing workers to participate in the decision-making processes of businesses for the aim of improving working conditions and anticipating the business development and their impacts on workers,” the ETUC’s Confederal Secretary, Isabelle Schömann, explained in an interview with EURACTIV.
