COMPENSATION
Fellows will be paid $27,000 annually based on a 29-hour work week. Benefits will include paid holidays, and may include parking/travel reimbursement. No health care benefit is available.
This Fellowship is based at WHQR s studios in downtown Wilmington, NC. The Fellow will report to the head of WHQR News, as an employee of WHQR Public Media.

Bard College Announces Free Tuition for Formerly Incarcerated Students

Bard College, a private liberal arts college, and JustLeadershipUSA, announced the launch of the third Bard Prison Initiative. Opening at the Countee Cullen Campus in Harlem this fall, the free program will open enrollment for those who have been impacted by the prison system, were formerly incarcerated inmates themselves, or are inspired to pursue careers in advocacy, community building, or social justice.

Cassandra Agredo has grown the soup kitchen at St. Francis Xavier church into the multi-service agency that is Xavier Mission. As the organization’s executive director, Agredo and her team provide an array of services and opportunities to New Yorkers in need. They prefer to be called a “for-impact” instead of a “nonprofit” organization, focusing on things they can change instead of those they can’t.
Direct service work has always been a part of Agredo’s life. When she was growing up in Rhode Island, her father worked at the Department of Human Services, and once the first soup kitchen opened, her parents would bring Agredo along while they volunteered. She continued on this path and obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from Fordham University. The new rule was months in the drafting, and is designed to keep people out of the road at busy intersections where panhandlers asking drivers and their passengers for money could fall into traffic or be struck by a car driven by an errant motorist.
Clearly inspired by the numbers of apparently homeless people who ask for money while cars are stopped at intersections, the new ordinance also brought out a new call for homeless people to take advantage of services now available, instead of risking injury by asking motorists for money. This affects all people, there certainly are some issues out there that affect a particular group of people, said Commission Chair Kevin Ruane, who continued his campaign urging homeless people to take advantage of services.
