6 May 2021 As part of Analysis in Government Month, Euan Baird shares how the Regional Development Team gained recognition in the ‘Impact on policy’ category at the Geography in Government Awards. Toward the end of what proved to be one of the most unexpected and challenging years for all of us, myself and colleagues in the Scottish Government’s Regional Economic Development Division were delighted to be recognised for our work on ‘Re-establishing Ayrshire as a Functional Economic Geography to benefit its communities’ at the Geography in Government Awards. Winning the ‘Impact on Policy’ category was a real boost to all involved, underlining that we were on the right path.

Where many in the Marketview Heights neighborhood saw problems with the vacant, city-owned lot at the corner of Forester and Mona streets, Ashley Smith saw promise. The 6,700-square feet of nothing had sat idle for years, a monument to a broad lack of investment in the neighborhood. But Smith, a mother of three, envisioned a community garden that she believed would beautify the block, instill pride, and put healthy food on the tables of her neighbors. “It’s just vacant and all it does is get mowed,” Smith said. “But there’s so much potential to have areas for children to read books and even go and do your homework. Just a safe space with flowers and gardens.”

Brian Stanley TD welcomes passing of Community Wealth Building motion

Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, has welcomed news that Clare County Council has passed a motion endorsing the Community Wealth Building model. This announcement follows the launch of Sinn Féin’s Community Wealth Building policy proposal which called for councils across the country to endorse the model.  Teachta Stanley said: “It is fantastic news that Clare County Council has passed a motion to endorse the Community Wealth Building model. “The motion was proposed by Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan and passed by the whole Council. “This marks significant progress for the Community Wealth Building movement in Ireland, and the first step in an exciting process.
