Powerful business and political interests have played a huge role behind the slow pace of urban land reform and redistribution.
This is according to the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (Seri), which this week released two revised papers on urban land reform and redistribution. –
The reports were a result of a series of papers commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2019, to help inform the urban land reform debate and future implementation.

Nhlanhla Gwendoline Sibanda is a sex worker who has been unable to make enough money during the Covid-19 lockdown to pay rent and other expenses.
She moved onto an empty property in the upmarket suburb of Dunkeld West last year. She lives with about 50 other people, some of whom claim to be living there for over two decades.
“Our industry really suffered last year. I lost my income and had to find another place to stay,” she said. There is no running water on the property.
The occupiers were evicted earlier this month on the basis of an interdict. But, represented by the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI), the occupiers challenged the eviction in the high court in Johannesburg. The court ruled on 9 April that the eviction was unlawful. The occupiers were then allowed to move back. SERI argued that the eviction was illegal because it was done without a court order.

The High Court in Johannesburg has ruled the removal of illegal occupants of a multimillion-rand vacant house in Dunkeld West as unlawful.

The court on Friday ordered the occupants to be allowed back on the premises.
The matter was taken to court by the Non-profit human rights lawyers of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri) last week.
Seri s Khuselwa Dyantyi says the owner of the house has blocked the entrance of the property with bricks.

More disappointment for Marikana families as senior police officers acquitted

Johannesburg - The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri) has been left disappointed after the high court in the North West acquitted four senior officers last week over the Marikana massacre almost a decade ago.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said they were still studying the judgment in order to make an informed decision.
North West NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame said they would issue a statement as soon as they finalised their decision,
