There is a newly installed three-panel mural on Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford. Commissioned by the Community Economic Development Center, it was conceptualized and painted by Kat Knutsen, and it is a joyous nod to three distinct cultures with rich histories and a vibrant presence in the city. Utilizing dance as a common theme, one panel honors the Black community, another embraces the Guatemalan constituency, and the other recognizes the Portuguese populace. Knutsen’s imaginative and robust celebratory paintings succeed so well in no small part because dance is universal. Dance is something that everyone understands. Like food and song and storytelling, dance is culture made manifest. It is art without pretense and it is universal.

Community Foundation awards $600k to nonprofits

Standard-Times The SouthCoast Community Foundation announced it is awarding over $600,000 of Stabilization Grants from its SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund to 60 nonprofits from the Southeastern Massachusetts region. “The selected group of 501(c)3 organizations clearly demonstrated a financial need due to COVID-19 and cover a range of areas of need including arts and culture, education, and economic opportunity,” a press release from the Community Foundation stated. New Bedford launches climate action plan for city, residents

NEW BEDFORD  By 2050, the city of New Bedford aims to be zero waste, use 100% renewable energy, and have thousands more trees planted, according to a climate action and resilience plan Mayor Jon Mitchell released Wednesday.  Just a week after the state released a roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the city released its own roadmap, NB Resilient, to guide not only the city, but also its residents in adapting to climate change and mitigating its impact. “In the midst of the pandemic, we in New Bedford know that the world goes on. There are other challenges we face, there are other opportunities we must seize – and top among all of them are the threats and opportunities presented by climate change,” Mitchell said in the website s launch video.
